W latach 20. na Broadwayu w Nowym Jorku pojawił się nowy gatunek nowoczesnego teatru muzycznego, synteza sztuk składająca się z piosenki i dialogu, gry aktorskiej, tańca i muzyki: musical. Stamtąd i z londyńskiego West Endu rozpoczął swój triumfalny pochód na cały świat.

Początki musicalu sięgają jeszcze dalej. Można odnaleźć wpływy Opéry komicznej, komedii, operetki, rewii i wodewilu, a także amerykańskich minstreli i wodewilu jako poprzedników. Za pierwsze "klasyczne" musicale uważa się sztukę „Lady, Be Good” (1924) autorstwa Gershwina, oraz poważną sztukę „Show Boat” (1927) autorstwa Kerna. („Sally’ 1920, „Show Boat’ 1927). Oprócz tych wymienionych, Cole Porter („Anything Goes’ 1934, „Kiss Me, Kate’ 1948, „Can-Can 1953) i Irving Berlin („Annie Get Your Gun’ 1946) tworzą pierwsze pokolenie kompozytorów muscialu. Po nich, Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein („Oklahoma!” 1943, „Karuzela” 1945, „Dźwięki muzyki” 1959), oraz Frederick Loewe („My Fair Lady” 1956) i Jerry Herman („Hello Dolly!” 1964, „La Cage aux Folles” 1983).

Ważnym wydarzeniem było „West Side Story” (1957) autorstwa Leonarda Bernsteina, którego wersja filmowa (1961) dała nowy impuls do bardziej rewiowych musicali filmowych popularnych od lat 40-tych z większym naciskiem na fabułę. Szczególny sukces odniósł musical filmowy „Grease” (1978) autorstwa Warrena Caseya & Jima Jacobsa.

Znane spin-offy to rockowe musicale autorstwa Galta McDermota („Hair” 1967) i Richarda O’Briena („Rocky Horror Picture Show” 1973).

Na współczesny musical znaczący wpływ wywarł Andrew Lloyd Webber („Jesus Christ Superstar” 1971, „Evita”1978, „Koty”1980, „Upiór w operze” 1986), który jest uważany za najważniejszego kompozytora musicali. Musicale są teraz komponowane jak opery, znikają dialogi mówione, a przez cały czas trwania spektaklu słychać śpiew. W latach 80. musicale Francuza Claude-Michela Schönberga („Les Misérables’”,„Miss Saigon”), jak również Stephena Sondheima („Sweeney Todd”, „Niedziela w parku z Georgem”, „Wstęp do lasu”) stały się sławne.

Przykładem wybitnego musicalu niemieckojęzycznego jest „Elisabeth” (1992) autorstwa Sylvestera Levaya. („Mozart!”, „Rebecca”).

Pod koniec lat 90. coraz większą popularność zdobywają tzw. musicale szafowe, w których piosenki danego wykonawcy lub zespołu z niewielkimi zmianami przerabiane są na własną opowieść. Przykładem może być „Gorączka sobotniej nocy” (Bee Gees) lub „Mamma Mia!” (ABBA).

W latach 2010-tych powstały: musical filmowy „La la Land” (2016) autorstwa Justina Hurwitza oraz animowany musical dla dzieci „Frozen” („Kraina lodu”), którego współautorem jest Robert Lopez.
