Amazing grace

Amazing Grace is an English spiritual song. It is one of the most popular hymns in the world. It owes its origin to a key experience of its author John Newton, who was captain of a slave ship. After he was in great distress at sea on 10 May 1748 and was saved after God's mercy had been invoked, he first treated the slaves more humanely. After some years he even gave up his profession completely, became a cleric instead and stood up for the fight against slavery.
